Driven to protect Minnesota’s environment

U-Spatial Associate Director
Office of the Vice President for Research

With the help of the Libraries, the University of Minnesota’s U-Spatial program serves and drives a fast-growing need for expertise in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing, and spatial computing across the University.

In one project, using historical aerial photos from the Borchert Map Library, we are collaborating with a researcher from UMD to study the impact over time that beavers have caused to Minnesota’s wildlife habitat in an effort to protect the state’s trout streams. With the help of the Libraries, U-Spatial is able to advance the many missions of a land-grant university and offer disproportionately great benefits to our researchers.”

The Libraries supports faculty in the creation of scholarly publications and helps them navigate such thorny issues as copyright, open access, digitization, data management, and more.

Open Rivers is an online journal that fosters critical conversations within and beyond the academic world on issues related to rivers and water. We seek participation from a wide range of scholars and practitioners and publish the best information for researchers, teachers, and the public. None of this would have been possible without the Libraries as advisers, platform builders, and publisher.”

Invest in technology and digital scholarship

Campaign Goal: $4 million

The Libraries has always been at the center of academic life for our students and faculty. But as technology has made vast amounts of content available anytime and from any place, research and learning are now taking place on multiple fronts. We must establish new centers for digital scholarship, and transform our spaces to become as adaptable as possible to accommodate changing information-delivery methods.

New funding will allow us to reconceive our spaces, strengthen our faculty partnerships, and advance research and scholarship.

Your gift to Research and Scholarship will:

Further develop the Libraries’ digital scholarship program for our faculty
Create knowledge innovation hubs in our libraries
Support graduate student research assistantships
